Consider joining us in this exciting opportunity to expand your content knowledge of American history, develop engaging classroom resources and materials, improve student knowledge of American history, and become part of a professional support network for teachers of American history in grades 4/5, 6/7, and 11, as well as for Special Education and ESL teachers of American history.

Here's what you do:

  • Attend and participate in all TAH activities;
  • Read and respond in writing to assigned books, articles, and workshops;
  • Create and teach one lesson plan and an extensive curriculum unit using expanded content knowledge, particularly primary sources, incorporating SOLs and engaging teaching strategies. Lesson plans and curriculum units will be specific to participant’s teaching assignment and will be published on the TAH website;
  • Observe and be observed by fellow cohort teachers and master teachers
  • Participate in evaluation; and
  • Share back in subsequent years with colleagues in school and district through in-service and conference presentations

Here’s what you get:

Three graduate credits in history from George Mason University. Throughout the year, this course will be taught by historians and museum curators. It will be tailored to the needs of elementary, middle, and high school teachers and will serve as content area credits for Virginia license renewal. This graduate course will include:

  • A one-week summer workshop focused on four historical periods (Early America, Civil War and Reconstruction, the Interwar Years (1914-45), and Post-World War II) and developing skills for analyzing online primary sources;
  • Case studies on key people and events through site visits to historical places during the year;
  • Four book groups during the year featuring biographies and autobiographies;
  • Grade level discussions facilitated by master teachers to foster effective classroom implementation of all workshops, site visits, and book groups.

Participation in a professional community that provides ongoing support and feedback for teachers of American history from:

  • Colleagues in the same grade level, across grade levels, in Special Education and ESL, and across schools and districts; and
  • Historians and master teachers.

Enhanced skills in using technology to foster continuous connections and build professional community. The project website will provide a central place for:

  • Sharing information and posting reflections;
  • Commenting on both lessons and curriculum units; and
  • Publishing completed lesson plans and curriculum units.

Financial incentives and support in the form of:

  • Stipend of $1000 for teachers who complete all requirements during the cohort year;
  • Three graduate history credits;
  • Books and variety of resources to be given to participants; and
  • Money provided for substitute teachers during professional development activities.
