747s and DC-10s

The new jet, along with its new interior and transformation also ushered in a new era of stewardess/flight attendant fashion. “Confronted with the challenge of designing a new 747 jet wardrobe for United’s stewardesses, internationally known couturier Jean-Louis had three alternatives: the mini, midi and maxi looks. He chose a new “Long Look,” that will go where the fashion winds blow in the next couple of years.23

Advertisements introducing the plane to United’s family, described the 747, “So, now the 747 is here and it has made major impact on air travel. Each airline has presented its version of this exciting new airplane to the public, and so will United, beginning July 23rd. But as, always, we’re doing something different…unique…and we think, better. We’re not planning to talk about just another big airplane…we’re going to make our 747 exclusively United’s by calling it “The Friend Ship.” 24

Details:
–Two first-class compartments in the forward section of the main passenger deck and three coach sections amidship and aft.
–Thirty-inch aisles in first class; 20-inch aisles in coach
–Five aisle crosswalks, allowed freedom of movement for cabin crew and passengers alike
–A “delightful” eight-place upper deck Red Carpet Lounge, accessed by a thirteen-step circular staircase (elegant, open, and compact) was built for use by first-class passengers, Stewardesses kept the deck supplied, using a dumbwaiter from the main deck
–Five large movie screens – from five to nearly seven feet wide – positioned so every passenger has a clear view.
–The galley was moved below the main deck, accessed by a two-person elevator
