Large cities had been part of
American since the revolution--Philadelphia, for example, was the
second largest city in the British Empire by 1776. But urban life
changed in the Jacksonian era. Cities like New York spurred by industrialization
and by improvements like the Erie Canal, the steamship and later the
railroad, grew incredibly quickly. They becae increasingly eciting
