A good example of our peculiar racial history. Patrick O'Malley was born in Ireland. His wife, Hester Holland, was born in southern Virginia   Their marriage certificate was issued in 1884. It was apparently "filed" in 1940, as the document you see below. What accounts for their being designated "colored?" I don't know. Any guesses?
