Final Exam

This exam will ask you to write a historical fiction of eight to ten pages, based on the following situation:

It is approximately 1900. You are from a small town in the Midwest. You've been drawn to a major city by the death of your Uncle. Your Uncle, a successful businessman, was well known in the city: newspapers widely published both his obituary and the news that you, his sole heir, have inherited a substantial sum of money.

Somewhere in one of the four "sites" on the main page, a man would like to speak to you. He will offer you some financial services. Your assignment is to A: find out who he is and if he is legitimate, and B: describe in detail the resources available to you in establishing his identity. Use the web site and the readings.

Remember, you are writing a piece of historical fiction--your paper should support its conclusions and descriptions with historical examples and citations. You can be as fantastic as you like in your essay, but you must use real historical examples and a plausible historical context. You can't have your character jump in a helicopter and fly away, for example. You can be male or female, as you wish, but remember there are historical consequences to the choice.

The papers are due on Wednesday, 12/15, at 4;30. You can hand them in early if you like.
