This project took me over an hour. I found numbers 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 quite easily, but the others took me a little time.
1. Trotsky English recording: After searching around for a bit on a few search engines and only finding non-English recordings, I went to CHNM – Resources – Guide to History for the Web and I typed Trotsky in the Keyword box and clicked on the Audio resource. A link to Historic Audio Archives came up but for some reason when I wasn’t able to connect to it (this was on Friday), but when I tried again on Monday I was able to connect. I then clicked on Rougues ‘n’ Heroes at eh RealAudio Gallery” and found Leon Trotsky speaking English to American Socialists, 1938. http://webcorp.com/realaudio/realaudiogallery.html
2. 1915 suffrage poem: This one also took me a little bit. I again tried searching Guide to History on the Web from the CHNM site, but didn’t find anything. I searched a number of search engines before finding it this way: In Altavista I typed suffrage poem and searched within using a Boolean search function I typed when AND women AND wanted and that brought me to a number of results which made it clear that the that the poem was written by Alice Duer Miller. I then found the poem by putting Alice Duer Miller suffrage poem into Google and found this site http://www.irc.gmu.edu/resources/workshopmaterials/html/html1.html The poem, Evolution, which contains that line is toward the bottom of the page.
3. Letter from George Washington: I knew that the Library of Congress has a lot of personal letters etc. so I went to the LOC website and searched in American Memory for GW’s letters. I then typed Pickering certain forged letters and found the letter. http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/P?mgw:1:./temp/~ammem_Psf9::
4. Willie Lynch: I typed in Willie Lynch slave speech into Google and a number of hits came back, one of them being: www.freemaninstitute.com/lynch.htm
5. Online debate about Cuban Missile Crisis: I was not able to find this one. I spent a considerable amount of time searching for it. I thought I might find it on the History News Network site since I know it has a number of history discussions and debates, but I didn’t see it there. So, I passed.
6. “Annual Review of Information Technology Developments for Economic Social Historians, 1993”: I found this on JSTOR by putting the title in the title box and searching the history database.
7. 4 Syllabi including Hamlet on the Holodeck: I went to the Syllabus Finder on the CHNM website and typed Hamlet on the Holodeck and found these four (among many others): http://www.tonisant.com/class/2002/syllabus.shtml; http://www.kleene-star.net/ICM/syllabus/readings.html; http://legacy.centenary.edu/~balexand/multimedia/2001/syllabus.html; http://www.courses.vcu.edu/ENG651-ejc/syl.htm
8. 1998 CHNM homepage: I knew that old web pages and sites could be found at www.archive.org so I went there and conducted an advance search. I typed in www.chnm.gmu.edu and searched between 1/1/98-12/31/98 and found it. http://web.archive.org/web/19980101-19981231re_/http://chnm.gmu.edu
9. Janet Murray with the Sims: I conducted a Google images search and typed Janet Murray. The second image is a picture of her and the Sims. http://images.google.com/images?q=janet+murray+&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search
