Review Essay Proposal

For my Web Review Essay I propose to examine the presentation on the web of the historical topic: The War of 1812. I believe that this topic will be an interesting one for the web review because of all the wars fought by the US it probably receives the least attention from the public. Does the internet reflect this? Are the sites extensive or do they reflect the lack of attention the war receives? Are they accurate and informative or is the lack of attention reflected in sites with spare or superficial, or worse, inaccurate information? The answers to these questions in regards to the topic chosen should also give an indication of the depth and quality of the history presented on the web.

A web search using the Google.com search engine returned numerous web references to the War of 1812. The sites that looked most promising for review are:

(1) www.militaryheritage.com/1812
Extensive website from militaryheritage.com with links to articles, book reviews, quizzes, sound clips, a chronolgy, and video clips. A British website apparently sponsored by The Discriminating General Company.
(2) www.multied.com/1812
A smaller website sponsored by "Multieducator: The Multimedia History Company"
(3) History Channel's War of 1812 website
And two teaching resource sites:
(4) teacher.scholastic.com's War of 1812 site
(5) proteacher's War of 1812 site

The first three of these being larger sites will be reviewed/discussed in-depth in the essay.
