For my web review I’d like to comment on various presentations of museum collections through on-line catalogues. I reviewed these back in the mid 1990s when only a handful of museums presented their collections on the Internet and at the time the presentations were thematic on-line exhibitions. Most complemented exhibitions in museum. I am currently involved in a project at work to make our collections accessible through our web site in a more systematic process than has been done in the past. As as result I have been thinking a lot about what kind of presentation is desirable and what additional categories of information should be made available. I’d like to review current sites where museums present their catalog information as well a images of there objects- not just an image with a title which appears to be a common occurrence. I plan on looking at several British sites as I have worked with staff from the UK on committees (i.e. CIDOC). These include the Victoria & Albert, the Museum of London, and the Imperial War Museum. I’d also like to look at United States museum sites as well as that of Canadians and Australians.
If this proposal is unacceptable, I could a review based on a topic. I have worked with our collection of First Ladies objects and could compare sites providing information on the First Ladies. These could include the First Ladies.org, POTUS, National Archive/ Presidential Library sites and online encyclopedias.
