Review Essay Proposal

I propose to review websites on South African history, with a particular emphasis on different interpretations of apartheid. I would discuss how well represented South African history is on the web in comparison to American or European history. The websites that I would discuss include a site posted by the South African government itself, which promises to provide "a people's history." I would examine how this site differs from unofficial sites aimed at different audiences, including one for South African expatriates, presumably many of them whites. The British Broadcasting Corporation also has a website devoted to South African history, as part of a series that pledges to tell the history of Africa from the African perspective. My review would also look at the online database created by the South African Truth and Reconciliation committee, which is an example of uncovering history for the purposes of national healing.
