This 1869 bird's eye view of Atchison, Kansas shows business growth along Commercial Street, paralleling the railroad and terminating at the Missouri River. Railroad development has begun; however Atchison clearly maintains strong river transport capabilities. The map key, however, stresses the town's institutional infrastructure rather than its commercial development and keys the location of the courthouse, jail, public school, parochial college, and theatrical hall and seven churches, two of which are “colored.”
