INTRODUCTION
Not only do maps provide some idea of spatial relationships and location, but they also can be used to gain some idea of the social values of the period and place. The “bird’s eye view” map is especially conducive to the task of “reading” a map, and Butte, Montana, is a study in social values in physical space.
