Tell Your Story

By telling your stories you can play an important role in the collection and preservation of Greek American history. The stories will be individually collected and then re-posted under the heading "Read a Story".

Tell your story about immigration and early settlement in the United States. What were your family's experiences as Greek immigrants? Tell your story about the traditional celebrations of important events in the lives of Greek Americans and their families. Talk about the way you and your family express and maintain Greek American customs and traditions. Post a tribute to unsung heroes. Tell your story about someone who has made significant contributions to his or her Greek American community.

To tell your story answer as many of the following eleven questions as you would like in the spaces provided and then fill in the following form to register and submit your story.

Who were the early immigrants from your family? Where did they come from in Greece and when did they come to America?



Where did they settle first? Did they move around or stay mainly in one part of the United States?



Tell about some of the interesting experiences of the immigrants from your family. What kinds of jobs did they find? How did they help to establish their Greek American communities? What difficulties did they face? What successes did they have?



Did any of your family members every return to Greece? To visit? To live permanently? Why or why not?



What ethnic traditions and customs influence the way you celebrate the birth of a child? The way you celebrate a wedding? The way you observe the death of a loved one?



How have these traditions changed over the years? How have they stayed the same?



How has intermarriage influenced the way your family celebrates and observes Greek American customs and traditions?



Does your Greek American community have its own cemetery? Where are your family members buried? What do their grave-markers look like?



Tell the story about people you know who have organized libraries, ethnic festivals, parades, or museums to celebrate Greek American ethnic ties.



Tell the story about people you know who have donated time and money to raise funds for charitable causes on behalf of Greek Americans, such as the establishment of homes for the elderly or aid to the poor.



Tell the story about people you know who have faithfully served on committees and boards to ensure the operation of various Greek American community functions.
