Contrary to first impressions,
Metro stations are not all alike. Some stations are above ground, with
canopies instead of vaults. In response to a lawsuit, the Authority added
elevators to serve wheelchair-bound riders. Some stations, such as Wheaton,
depart from the standard vault design to save money, and many stations
gain individuality from features, such as the famous Dupont Circle escalator,
tailored to their location.
