The year 2001 marked a double milestone for Metro: the 25th anniversary of the first train as well as the completion of the 100-mile system adopted in 1968. But Metro will not stop building; planners have proposed a number of possible additions. In the District of Columbia, a station could help redevelop former industrial land, while in the suburbs highway medians and abandoned railroads have been considered for new routes. Some observers hope to see Metro built around the beltway and beyond.
