| After the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in April 1968, riots destroyed homes and businesses along 7th, U, and 14th Streets in central Washington. At the urging of Walter Fauntroy, the D.C. Government requested WMATA to reroute its mid-city line along those streets in an attempt to encourage rebuilding., Metro Memo, May 1969, May 1969.
