The Nineteenth-Century Crowd
The impact of the French Revolution remained strong throughout the 19th century, especially in the long struggle to establish a republic in France. Artists continued to represent events that now belonged to history. They recreated and interpreted the past, sometimes with cool detachment, more often with romantic passion.
Grand commemorative monuments were erected, especially around the time of the centennial celebrations of 1889, while the popular image of the Revolution lives on in illustrations to countless books devoted to the period.
