On 29 June 1793, a group of Vendéans (counterrevolutionaries from the west of France) resisting the mass levy of soldiers issued by the Convention, and having taken up arms against the Republic, attacked the most important city of the region, Nantes. From the famous series of engravings by Berthault, this image depicts a small band of insurgents seemingly fighting against the winds in an attempt to derail the revolution. This Parisian view of the Vendéan resistance was reproduced frequently in such pro–Jacobin representations as those of Berthault.
