"Image of the Queen’s Execution"

This highly stylized engraving depicts the execution of the Queen by guillotine in the Place of the Revolution. The huge crowd of soldiers surrounding the platform is reminiscent of the execution of Louis the previous January. The title of the image, the "Day of 16 October" suggests that this event was one of the great revolutionary journées (days), when popular actions turned the course of events. While it is unclear in retrospect that Marie Antoinette’s execution held such importance politically, it suggests that to contemporaries, this moment was expected to be a major turning point.
