Sean Takats is Assistant Professor of History at George Mason University and Acting Director of Research Projects at the Center for History and New Media. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale and his doctorate from the University of Michigan, where his dissertation focused on the professionalization of cooking among domestic servants in eighteenth-century France. Takats has lectured and written extensively on literacy, the history of work, domestic architecture, the history of medicine, and the evolution of taste as a cultural category. In addition to his research interest in early modern Europe, Takats has a technology background that includes web development and consulting at one very small company (maxfunds.com) and one rather large one (IBM). After seeing a demonstration of NCSA Mosaic in 1993, Takats confidently predicted that the web would “never take off.”
At CHNM Takats co-directs Zotero and is a principal investigator on an NEH-funded text mining initiative.
