Andrew Owen Photo Exhibit Presentation

Announcements

Dear American Studies Students, Alumni, and Faculty,

American Studies alumnus Andrew Owen and his collaborator, Ross McDermott, will be making a presentation on their photography exhibit,”The American Festivals Project,” which is currently on display in Georgetown as a part of the prestigious FotoWeekDC. The talk will take place this Thursday evening, November 12, on campus.

The American Festivals Project unearths the hidden, and at times bizarre, festivals and competitions of America’s small towns. With photography, video and writing, the project documents over 40 events with the aim of discovering and understanding American subcultures. The presentation will feature slides of photos from the exhibit.

In addition to discussing the work, Andrew will address how the American Studies major informed the work. The talk will be of interest to students contemplating or working on the senior thesis, as it illustrate how photography can be used effectively to document aspects of American life.

Students, alumni, and faculty, please join us to catch up with this successful young American Studies alumnus and celebrate his accomplishments!

Here are the details:
Date: November 12th,
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: McShain Lounge – Large
Reception with light hour d’oeuvres following the presentation

Please RSVP to amst@georgetown.edu

Studs Terkel Event

Announcements

This goes nicely with our Depression unit. Seems like a nice program:

A Celebration of the Life and Work of Studs Terkel
Monday, December 7 at 8 p.m. in Gaston Hall
Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Death, Rebirth, and Hunger for a Faith
Adapted from Studs Terkel’s book by Prof. Derek Goldman
Featuring David Strathairn (Academy Award Nominee for Good
Night and Good Luck), Ed Asner (Up, Lou Grant), other leading performers from DC and beyond, and GU students and alumni

Georgetown’s Theater and Performance Studies Program and Arena Stage commemorate the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author, broadcaster and activist Studs Terkel, who died on October 31, 2008 at age 96. First developed and presented in several celebrated renditions by Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, Will the Circle Be Unbroken? is a poignant evening of song, story and celebration. In this concert-style reading of the life-affirming adaptation of Terkel’s book of interviews on death and dying, the subjects range from everyday citizens — parents, medics, patients, teachers, and clergy — to recognizable figures such as author Kurt Vonnegut, actress Uta Hagen, musician Doc Watson, and Studs Terkel himself. The result is a vibrant tapestry of life’s full process that the Chicago Sun-Times called “unforgettable.”

$30 general / $15 faculty, staff / $5 student

Newsletter: Another Message from AMSTDS

Announcements

Forwarded from Trish at the AMSTDs Deptartment:

In the past couple of years, a student has contributed an article for the annual Newsletter featuring a specific class they’re in. For this year’s AMST Newsletter we would like to feature Sharron Leon’s Civ 3 class. Would anyone be willing to contribute a short piece on Civ III with Leon? We would like the piece to focus specifically on her use of the blog and the role of her new media efforts in your learning process. Something like that.

Thank you in advance!

Cheers,
Trish

Book Talk: The Straight State

Announcements

The United States Studies Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars invites you to a book discussion:

THE STRAIGHT STATE: SEXUALITY AND CITIZENSHIP IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICA

with author

MARGOT CANADAY
History, Princeton University

and commentators

THOMAS SUGRUE
History, University of Pennsylvania

SIOBHAN SOMERVILLE

The federal government has not always targeted homosexual identity explicitly. Yet, as Margot Canaday shows in this pathbreaking book, throughout the twentieth century, the government used its laws and regulations to identify and extend control over gay men and lesbians in three policy domains: immigration, the military, and welfare. Join us for an enlightening discussion of how the U.S. built “a straight state.”

Thursday, November 5, 3-5 p.m. – Reception to Follow
Moynihan Board Room, 6th floor
Woodrow Wilson Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, DC
This is a free public event, but RSVPs are requested.
