I met Larry when I started teaching at George Mason in 1998. I remember the scene vividly: Larry standing in the doorway of my office introducing himself--his enthusiasm filling the room and spilling out into the hall. Eventually, Larry and Cornelia got to know my whole family--including my parents and sisters. When my sister Stephanie got married, she announced that she wanted Larry to perform the ceremony! And while that didn't happen, the fact that she wanted it to seems somehow emblematic of the kind of person Larry was. Presence: Lively conversations about past and present, a generous spirit and enormous heart embracing an expanding circle of friends. Absence: Empty seats, this year and last, in the front rows at Fabrangen on Rosh Hashanah. Still waiting for the Levine minivan to return to Capitol Hill as in times past.
