Where were you during the 2003 blackout in the Northeastern U.S. and Canada? (please include city and state)
New York City, New York
Tell your story:
I am 14 years old and live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. I was on vacation when it happened. I was going around the stature of liberty and they said we couldn't get off because there was a "minor" backout. We got off the ship and walked 3 hours back to our appartment. I wanted to stop so many times but my mom said if we don't get back before the sun goes down we will have to sleep on the street. My grandma, who was back at teh appartment, had no clue what was going on. My dad, who lives in georgia, called her and told her what was going on because he saw it in the news. When we got back we had to walk up 11 flights of stairs in complete darkness. For dinner we went across the street to a pizza shop. We didn't have any water so we went to the fire hydrant and filled a bucket to flush the toilet. When the sun went down we went to bed. In the morning we went to a coffee shop and had day old muffins. We went to a rent a car place and stood in line for 1 and 1/2 hours. When we got to the desk there was this guy next to us that wanted a specific color and a specific brand of car. My mom told them that she wants a car with 4 wheels, an engine, and AC. We drove to long island where my mom had a high school graduation reunion.
If you remember the blackouts of 1965 and/or 1977, how did your experience compare?
I wasn't born yet.
In addition to saving your story to the archive, may we post it to the web? (yes/no)
