What were your thoughts and feelings when you heard that Columbia was lost?
Sadness - for the families and friends of those killed and that brave explorer lives were lost and that this event would put manned space exploration on a lower priority than robotic exploration due to the risk of more human lives lost. Humans were meant to explore and shuttle astronauts are well aware of this risk on every flight. They are willing to risk their lives to further our knowledge of outer and inner space.

If you are old enough to remember, please compare your responses to other important moments in space travel like the Challenger disaster and the moon walk.
Comparable - we need to learn as much as we can from these events so the same mistakes or similar ones will not be repeated again or in the case of the moon walk successes what we did right to ensure repeated success.
|
Have your views of space travel changed over time?
No - I strongly believe space travel is an essential part of the human nature of exploration and discovery - we should always pursue and encourage this spirit of discovery.
