Thoughts on the Columbia Space Shuttle Tragedy

Submitted March 17, 2003, 10:12 PM

What were your thoughts and feelings when you heard that Columbia was lost?
At that moment-disbelief, then pain. Things have been going wretchedly enough in this world- did our hope of escape need to go too?
If you are old enough to remember, please compare your responses to other important moments in space travel like the Challenger disaster and the moon walk.
I don't remember the moon landings, though I was around at the time. But I remember Challenger. Then, I was stunned. Now, I'm disappointed-haven't they learned that you can't build castles in the air on the cheap?
Have your views of space travel changed over time?
Yes and no. I have always felt that it was nifty. As time has gone on, though, I have come to the belief that if the human race is going to survive, it isn't going to be by remaining on just one world, but by growing, expanding, and settling in orbital colonies and on or in other worlds.
In addition to saving your story to the archive, may we post it to the web? (yes/no)
yes
