Every traveler travels with a purpose in mind. Sometimes when historians find travel narratives, they are confronted with only a small piece of the larger account. The historian’s task is to puzzle out the purpose of the trip from that small selection. Here are three accounts of travel to India. The selections provided offer clues to each author’s purpose. Read the text carefully and try to figure out the author’s reason for travel and for writing about the travel.
