This site offers 10,000 images of roughly 2,000 objects or sets of objects from a collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art. The collection ranges in date from prehistoric times to the present and includes a wide range of art objects, including sculpture, painting, ceramics, calligraphy, archaeological artifacts, textiles, lacquerware, and metalwork. The site is divided into two sections: “Masterworks” and “On-line Catalogue.” The “Masterworks” section provides a detailed look at 100 of the Museum’s most famous pieces. Users may enlarge each image to full screen and may zoom in to see specific details. Each image in this section is accompanied by an explanatory paragraph of more than 150 words. The “Paintings” section of “Masterworks” is especially content rich, and includes a detailed explanation of the Twelve Devas, a set of 12 scrolls. The “On-line Catalogue” section is a searchable database of the online images. The images may be searched by keyword or category, and the site offers a complete list of the artists, categories, countries, and time periods represented in the collection. Images may be enlarged, but are not accompanied by the detailed textual information found in the “Masterworks” section. The entire site is available in English and Japanese.
