The British Library Online Newspaper Archive
The British Library
This site, currently under construction, has digitized copies of five British newspapers (The Daily News, News of the World, The Penny Illustrated Paper, The Manchester Guardian, and The Weekly Dispatch) for selected years between 1851 and 1918. The primary way to view the papers’ contents is through a keyword search function that searches the full text of all the digitized newspapers. They can also be browsed by publication and date. All text is fully readable either in the browser or in PDF format. To give users a general introduction to the site’s materials, several topic archives have been created. Especially useful to those interested in world history, their focus is on world affairs, with current highlighted archives on World War I and London’s Crystal Palace international trading forum in the mid-1800s. Forthcoming collections include selections of articles on China, the Balkans, and Russia. Note that the site works best when viewed in Internet Explorer. For a more complete collection of The Penny Illustrated Paper, see the British Library’s Collect Britain site, which presents browsable, searchable scans of the full run of the publication from 1861 to 1913—40,000 pages and 500,000 images.
