This image database contains more than 85,000 images, representing approximately 12,000 artists, drawn from the collections of the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The images date from the 6th century BCE to the 20th century CE and include paintings, photographs, prints, furniture, pottery, jewelry, functional art, objects of all styles, and much more. Though there is not a wealth of contextual information, the date, artist, title, and medium of the work is always provided. The images may be searched by keyword or with an advanced search. The only way to browse the database is to search by date. The advanced search option also allows for country-specific searching. A useful, fun tool is the “My Gallery” feature which uses Shockwave software to allow users to become virtual curators and create their own personalized art gallery, which is then available for public viewing. All images may be enlarged, and users may zoom in for detailed viewing.
