| | This database, drawn from the Stanley Collection of African Art at the University of Iowa, contains more than 500 images of art objects from Sub-Saharan Africa. Objects include pottery, shrines, jewelry, masks, and musical instruments. The collection is strongest in art from the Congo, with 213 images, and also has about 50 images each for Mali and the Cote d’Ivoire. One of the site’s most useful features is that all of the images are accompanied by a detailed catalog entry, often including a short paragraph explaining the function and use of the art object. Most of the images, however, are not dated. The images enlarge to almost full screen. The images are retrieved through a modified search by group, country, type, material, and style. Each search category is accompanied by a scroll-down list of search options. The photographs of the images were taken between 1996 and 1999 by the “Art and Life in Africa Project” at the University of Iowa.
