| | In 1994, Doreen and Sidney Spellman donated their collection of 2,500 Victorian sheet music covers to Reading University Library. This site provides access to 800 digitized color images of the sheet music covers. The covers, dating from 1850 to 1900, address many issues in Victorian life and popular culture, such as women and family life. Covers especially focus on music hall artists; sports and pastimes; animals; and travel. To access the images, follow the link to the Visual Arts Data Service, based at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, University College, and click on “Narrow by collection” at the top of the menu. There is no way to browse the Spellman Collection, but both simple and advanced searching options are available. To search only the Spellman Collection, uncheck the boxes next to all the other collections first. Each record is accompanied by the name of the artist or lithographer, type of art, and date.
