This image database contains more than 24,000 images of artwork throughout the world and across time. The collection ranges from 15th- to17th-century European painting and sculpture to biblical images, from Byzantine art objects and architecture to a large collection of Chinese painting, sculpture, and architecture. The images include scans of paintings, photographs of ancient objects, and photographs of contemporary architecture, and can be accessed by browsing or searching. The “Collections” option allows users to browse a selection of the entire collection through larger categories such as “The Middle East,” “Africa,” and “Science, Industry, and Technology,” or through smaller categories such as “19th Century Applied Arts” or “Medieval British Gothic.” The collection may be searched by keyword or by period, art form, nationality, city/site, style, and object or building type. Although the images are not accompanied by detailed annotations, basic identifying information, such as date, country, and type of artwork, is provided.
