Strip Photographs

Image: Action photography usually conjures up the vision of a heavily-burdened photographer lugging all manner of telephoto lenses, one or two tripods and, of course, a motor drive attachment across expanses of stadium parking lots. The resulting photos usually display a vast knowledge of photographic expertise: cars streaking along at 200mph; a high jumper suspended eternally in midair; a motorcycle leaping over the steep ridges of a dirt track. Enter into this realm of expensive equipment and highly developed skill the amateur photographer who, after several attempts to emulate the action-packed shots of the pros, throws up his hands in frustration, vowing never again to mix sports and photography. But some photographers are not so easily discouraged. Faced with the challenge of finding an original approach to an overworked subject, there is always an innovator who leaves convention behind. Such a photographer is Pennsylvania-based George Harvan who uses a photomontage technique he calls kinesthetics to dramatize the illusion of speed in action photography. By a simple process of cutting prints into strips and staggering the strips as they are pasted onto mount board, Harvan creates photos whose subjects seem to race across the print.

Image: George Harvan included most of the following photographs in The Time of Mollies (Lansford, 1969). He coupled many of the photographs with lines from contemporary ballads and poems that he found in the Mauch Chunk Democrat, Mauch Chunk Coal Gazette, the Pottsville Chronicle, the Lansford Leader, and the United Mine Workers Journal.

Image: In the chutes I graduated instead of going to school--Remember, friends, my parents they were poor; When a boy left the cradle it was always made the rule; To try to keep starvation from the door. At eight years of age to the breaker first I went, To learn the occupation of a slave; I was certainly delighted, and on picking slate was bent --My ambition it was noble, strong and brave.

Image: Little I thought when I grew old and mining could do no more, I'd go back to the breaker where I spent my days before. This world is full of trouble, hardship, care and strife, It's twice a boy and once a man, is a poor miner's life.

Image: There came to this country a short time ago, A poor Irish widow from the County Mayo. She had but one son, his age it was eight, And the boss gave him work picking slate. The first day at the breaker the boys all did stare, For poor little Mike was the youngest lad there. They asked him his age; said he, I'm just eight. So they nicknamed him Mickey Pick-Slate.
