Mutt's origin | Mutt as "the little guy"

Mutt begins his career as an anonymous "fight fan" on the margins of Fisher's sports strips.

Mutt's size in relation to the other figures in the drawing and his position as marginal commentator place him in the role of a "little guy" similar to Herriman's Gooseberry Sprig.
